Sun Shelf
A "Sun Shelf" goes by many different names (e.g., Baja Bench, Baja Shelf or Tanning Ledge). Whatever the name, the Sun Shelf is a flat, shallow area in your pool (usually 6 inches deep), before the deep end of the swimming pool.
Pool Owners usually incorporate this feature into their pool for several reasons:
It is an ideal spot for owners to lounge and tan near the pool because they can be in and out of the water at the same time.
It allows you to relax in the water without having to change into a swimsuit, or arduously maneuver yourself on a raft or pool float.
It is an excellent area for small children, a family pet, or even someone who is handicapped to cool off during a hot summer afternoon due to its shallow depth.
It allows you to relax by your pool earlier in the day before the deeper end of the pool has a chance to warm up.
Pool Shallowing & Reshaping
The way pools are used changes over time, either with new owners or with the addition of kids. If you have an 8-foot or deeper pool and want to make it more kid-friendly, shallower to heat faster or to enjoy a game of water volleyball, it is possible to make the pool more shallow.
